GIS Officer at FHI

Since 1971, Family Health International (FHI) has been at the forefront of public health research and intervention program in the developing countries. In collaboration with national governments, local communities and leading research institution FHI delivers services and conducts research in HIV/AIDS, other infectious diseases and reproductive health to improve it lives and well-being of some of the world’s most vulnerable populations. In Nigeria, FHI is engaged in providing public health services and implementing programs in HIV/AIDS, TB, reproductive health, malaria, and health systems strengthening partnership with the Government of Nigeria. To strengthen our operations in the country, we are seeking qualified candidates to fill the post of:

 GIS Officer

Location: Country Office

Under the supervision of the Senior Database Officer, the database GIS officer is responsible for planning, maintenance and development of FHI/GHAIN database and  geographical information system.

 Key Responsibilities

  • Design and create special products, including maps, digital data, reports and statistics
  • Prepare and maintain metadata documentation of GIS databases
  • Participate in GHAIN GIS needs analysis and customize desktop GIS software for GHAIN applications
  • Teach desktop GIS software skills to users while providing support for applications-related questions and problems
  • Administer and maintain GHAIN’S DBMS (DHIS and LAMIS)
  • Provide technical assistance to GHAIN sites using the DHIS and LAMIS
  • Recommend hardware upgrades to the database server as needed
  • Coordinate   data   management issues, e.g. deletion  of records, query management, and internet reports within the data user groups        
  • Develop and enforce policies to ensure security and confidentiality of GHAIN’S identifiable health data
  • Monitor staff compliance with confidentiality policies to ensure that security standards are met
  • Design/create special maps and digitize the maps to GIS systems- ArcGIS 9.x and Arc Explorer
  • Working knowledge of relational database.

 Minimum Requirements             

  • Candidates must possess Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline, with a minimum of 5-7 years relevant experience
  • Or masters degree with 3-5 years relevant experience and a minimum two years experience of GIS in a comparable environment
  • 1-3 years experience in HIV/AIDS programming and experience working with NGOs and CBOs
  • Postgraduate degree in a related GIS discipline will be an advantage
  • Experience in the production of maps and graphics using GIS systems – ArcGIS 9.x and Arc Explorer
  • Working knowledge of relational databases.
