Over the last two years, the government of Imo State worked towards the re-branding of Ahiajoku Lecture series which has evolved into a cultural education of international repute. As part of the administration’s re-branding efforts, it has recently announced the institutionalization of the annual lecture series through the establishment of Ahiajoku Institute.
The Ahiajoku Institute will have overall responsibility for organizing the annual lecture series, researching into Igbo culture and social structure, exhibition of Igbo civilization’ indigenous local cuisine, artifacts, sculptures, organizing of youth cultural carnivals and production of publications, attracting tourists to the Institute, as well as ensuring the realization of a global brand objective.
To help drive this initiative, the State Government is seeking to recruit competent, dynamic and committed individuals to fill the below strategic
Position: Director General – Ref: No. ES00523
Reporting to the Commissioner of Culture and Tourism, the successful candidates will have over sight responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Institute
He/she will provide strategic leadership and direction to the executive management towards the realization of the institute’s objectives and goals, as well as promote the Institute’s public image.
Specific responsibilities include to:
- Champion the development and implementation of overall strategic thrust/goals, policies, plans and procedures for effective take off of the Institute and attainment of financial self sustainability within the next three years.
- Develop and implement initiatives to promote Igbo culture and social structure across the globe.
- Develop and Institute strong integrity and high ethical standards, as well as, establish a goal / result oriented performance driven culture.
- Develop and manage relationship with various stakeholders including government departments, communities, and all Igbo intellectuals both within and outside the Nigeria.
- Source for funding and attract sponsors from top of the range corporate organizations to partner with the Institute in the execution of its various initiatives and programmes.
- Develop performance targets and milestones for various departments in line with the Institute’s mandate.
- In conjunction with directors and unit heads, translate departmental goals to corresponding performance plans and targets
- Manage and implement the Institute s budget to ensure that necessary financial resources are made available and that expenditure is kept within budget limits.
- Develop, review and analyse reports to track results; formulate strategies for improvement based on available data.
Qualification, Knowledge, Skills
- A serving or retired Professor of Arts or Social Sciences preferably History, Sociology/Anthropology, Religious Knowledge, Philosophy, Physiology with specialisation in African Traditional Religion or in related discipline from a reputable institution.
- Minimum of Twenty (20) years’ post-qualification experience in the academia, arts, culture or a related industry, eight (8) of which must be at a senior management level either in the public or private sector.
- Relevant experience in a will be a distinct advantage
- Outstanding team player, result-oriented and high energy level.
In addition, eligible candidates for the above position should possess:
- Excellent knowledge of Igbo culture, history and traditions.
- Strategic orientation, good leadership skills with ability to motivate team members and manage budgets.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
