Shell’s business objective in China is to help address the country’s energy priorities including energy supply/security, environmental protection and energy efficiency, working in partnership with Chinese companies and customers to mutual benefit both in China and overseas.
Exploration and Production (E&P) has activities in 45 countries. The Group operates the largest volume of oil and gas worldwide.
Changbei Gas Development, Shannxi
Shell is the operator to develop the Changbei natural gas field under a Production Sharing Contract with PetroChina. The field has started commercial production since March 1, 2007, providing natural gas to markets in Beijing, Shandong, Hebei and Tianjin. Shell has an entitlement to about 50% of gas volumes over the 20 - year project lifetime.
Xijiang Oil Field, South China Sea
Shell has a 30% share of oil production from two offshore Xijiang oil fields, located 150 km south of Hong Kong in the South China Sea. Shell’s partners in the fields are CNOOC and ConocoPhillips, which jointly operate the fields.
Responsibilities:
- Working closely with both Shell China Exploration & Production Company Limited and New Business Development & regional exploration team to generate and develop new venture opportunities within China;
- Develop new unconventional or tight gas play concepts within China, on the basis of basin to play level, which meet internal investment criteria;
- Unconventional gas projects may encompass basin centre gas, shale gas and coal bed methane hydrocarbon habitats;
- Provide geological support to and coordination of new business activities within China, specifically initial opportunity screening, data QA/QC, translation and interpretation with follow-up recommendations for specific study activities – to be carried out by an extended team;
- In the event that local contractors are used in the maturation of an opportunity, provide coordination and guidance and act as liaison between contractors and Shell study teams;
- Assume the role of project geologist to mature new business projects prior to the resourcing of a full team;
- Participate in appropriate external industry and government fora and use a strong network of external contacts for both proactive and reactive opportunity identification.
Requirements:
- 5-10 years experience in Exploration play development with a strong background in understanding exploration principles in a clastic environment. Advance knowledge of reservoir sedimentology, sequence stratigraphy and diagenesis, particularly referring to tight gas reservoirs;
- In-depth understanding of the principles of Tight Gas resource plays preferable. Some experience in the exploitation of unconventional gas would be an added advantage;
- Advanced level of understanding of structural geology;
- Good awareness of associated Petroleum Engineering disciplines and the impact of reservoir geology on other petroleum engineering activities;
- Fluency in spoken and written English is essential for this position;
- Authorisation to work in China is required for this position.
