Description
The Director of Virtual Engineering (VE) will report solid line to the Mission Systems Group (MSG) Vice President of Business Systems and dotted line to the Mission Systems Group Vice President of Engineering. The Director of VE will be responsible for leading the execution, utilization and maintenance of the ATK Virtual Engineering initiative.The ATK VE capability provides system engineering services, applications and infrastructure that enhance collaboration across secured and unsecured company intranet and U.S. Government internet connections resulting in reduced engineering cycle time and labor. The VE job requirements also include support across multiple ATK sites for new weapon systems proposals, product design and development activities, and production efforts.The ATK VE capability provides a broad range of system engineering services including:
· Product 3D design and visualization,
· Product design for manufacture / design for assembly (DFM / DFA) simulation and analysis,
· Product simulation and assessment against mission requirements,
· Manufacturing process optimization and a virtual operations training environment,
· Product quality assessment, and
· Reduced product component cost through direct digital manufacturing linked across ATK, Customer and Government sites.
The successful candidate will be accountable for planning and directing, in concert with the ATK MSG VE Executive Steering Committee, all efforts necessary to meet objectives for virtual engineering and collaboration for MSG. As a result, the objective for the Director of VE is to integrate advanced engineering hardware and software tools and capabilities across all MSG divisions to allow efficient design, development, manufacture and life cycle management of all DoD systems and subsystems produced by ATK at the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory (ABL) Manufacturing Center of Excellence (MCE) in Rocket Center, WV and other MSG locations. This role will also be responsible for VE activities for commercial (or non DoD) VE initiatives at other MSG locations, as well.The VE concept integrates all advanced engineering capabilities used by the ATK Mission Systems Group into a seamless product life cycle tool suite. The successful candidate must be familiar with diverse engineering and manufacturing processes and tools including modeling of conceptual designs, system architectures; budget and cost planning and analysis to meet engineering and manufacturing objectives, integrated logistics support (ILS), manufacturing processes and end of life activities. A background in system engineering principles, design for production, modeling and simulation, CMMI, LEAN and Six Sigma is required. Future system enhancement planning will be focused on keeping pace with state-of-the-art changes in system engineering techniques and their applicability to VE.
Education
The successful candidate must have a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering with a minimum of 10 years experience in a virtual engineering related field, or a Master of Science Degree in Engineering with 5 years experience in equivalent related job experience. The preferred candidate will have a secondary degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Information Technology or Computer Networking.
Experience
The ideal candidate has worked in a complex engineering product development environment and has “hands on” experience in system engineering and modeling & simulation. He or she has in-depth understanding the development process and how the software and infrastructure tools facilitate that process. The candidate must have the ability to effectively manage multiple projects, including planning, budgeting, executing and driving technical excellence. The candidate must have the ability to communicate within a highly technical environment and lead concept development activities. The candidate must have the ability to work well in a time critical environment and provide technical oversight via requirements flow-down, process control and standardization, resource management and assessment of results, including timely implementation of corrective action as necessary.The candidate must have knowledge of analytical software and hardware architecture as applicable to system engineering, and product design and development. And, lastly, the candidate must have the ability and experience to market the capabilities of VE both internally and externally to assure maximum utilization and benefit as this position will be responsible for marketing of VE capability to internal and external customers. This will require frequent presentation of technical material, engineering processes and the VEs role in support of those processes to senior staff, industry leaders, customers, high ranking military leadership and Department of Defense (DoD) staff, etc.
