Job Description:

The Department of Health and Social Services

is recruiting for a Social Worker I/II position

This position is one of five (5) workers in the Intake/Investigations Unit at the Field Office of the Office of Children’s Services.

Duties assigned will include:

* Screening agency referrals
* Assessing families for the safety of children
* Assuming emergency custody of children when appropriate
* Placing children in safe environments when necessary
* Safety plan and case plan development and
* Writing and filing petitions with the court system

The successful candidate will rotate with other staff to provide after-hour emergency on-call responses to alleged child abuse and neglect situations. Some travel to surrounding communities will be required.

Special Note:
An individual who has graduated with a from an and who is otherwise eligible for licensure as a social worker in the State of Alaska may apply for a vacancy. As of July 1, 2001, a Social Worker license issued by the State of Alaska is required for all persons initially hired into this job class. Continued employment as a Social Worker requires employees adhere to the Social Worker licensing requirements in accordance with Alaska Statutes and regulations. Refer to AS 08.95 Social Workers and 12 AAC 18 Board of Social Work Examiner administered by the Department of Community and Economic Development, Division of Occupational Licensing.

All positions require a valid Alaska driver’s license, and successful of a background investigation, including fingerprinting and a criminal records check.

Minimum Qualifications:

Possession of a current Social Worker license issued by the State of Alaska (see “Special Note”).
OR
Employed currently and continuously since June 30, 2001, by the State of Alaska under the job classification title “Social Worker.”

Social Workers and Children’s Services Specialists are flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Social Worker I, II (CS) or Children’s Service I or II depending on the applicant’s training and/or experience. If filled at the I level promotion to the II level will occur upon successful of the probationary period and required training.

If you are not in possession of a current Social Worker license issued by the State of Alaska or otherwise eligible for licensure as a Social Worker in the State of Alaska as described in the “Special Note” section below (or) if you have not been currently and continuously employed by the State of Alaska under the job classification title “Social Worker” since June 30, 2001, please apply for the Children’s Services series open concurrently with this recruitment.”

If you meet the minimum qualifications for the Social Worker I/II (CS) job class and are not currently licensed as a Social Worker with the State of Alaska, you are highly encouraged to also apply for the Children’s Service I/II recruitment that is posted on Workplace Alaska. We encourage this dual application process because if you apply for, and are selected for the Social Worker job class, we cannot allow you to begin work until you obtain your Social Worker License with the State of Alaska. This licensing process can take up to several weeks to be finalized. On the other hand, if you apply for, and are selected for the Children Services I/II position, we can bring you to work as a Children’s Services until you obtain your Social Worker license and then reclassify you from a Children’s Services to a Social Worker.
