The incumbent will manage Maersk Line’s USA Country Cluster intermodal operations in the U.S. and Canada including all trucking, rail and inland container yard operations to include intermodal routing strategy. The incumbent will supervise a team of intermodal professionals who will interact with over 350 intermodal service vendors and with the USA Dispatch team, other USA Country functions and the Centre Product and Planning teams. The incumbent is responsible for developing and implementing intermodal operations strategy and policy in the USA Country Cluster and will coordinate the management of vendor contracts to lead intermodal cost control efforts in the country cluster while managing a budget of up to 1 billion dollars. The position holder will be responsible for establishing an effective compliance and audit program for all appropriate laws, regulations and contractual requirements associated with Maersk Line intermodal transportation. The USA Intermodal Operations Director will also coordinate with Centre Operations, NAM Liner Operations Cluster, USA Finance and various other USA Country and Operations functions to lead contract negotiations and procurement activities for trucking, rail and container yard services in the USA Country Cluster.
Position Responsibilities
Leadership and cross-functional coordination
• Lead the USA Country Intermodal team. Motivate and develop direct reports and team members. Set and monitor intermodal team goals and objectives that are aligned with USA Country Operations. Department, Maersk Inc. and Maersk Line objectives and key performance indicators.
• Cross-functional coordination and leadership - coordinate and interact with Maersk Line Centre product and planning functions, the NAM Liner Operations Cluster, USA Dispatch team and USA Country organization functions as necessary to accomplish Intermodal goals and objectives and to support the USA Country goals and objectives. Assume a leadership role in cross-functional efforts as necessary.
• Enhance employee engagement in the intermodal team and promote empowerment of team members to make decisions at the right level.
• Support the training and education of Intermodal team members to better support execution of the Intermodal objectives and to enhance overall performance and efficiency. This includes cross-training as necessary to enhance continuity and cooperation within intermodal activities.
Intermodal Strategy and Policy
• Lead the development of USA Country Cluster Intermodal strategy, plans and policy that support continuous improvements in efficiency, customer service, safety and operational execution.
• Represent Maersk Line at various industry meetings and organizations to enhance business opportunities and to promote the image and reputation of Maersk Line with customers, vendors and the general public.
• Business intelligence - Know and understand current industry trends and events. Develop and disseminate information to other parts of the organization as necessary to ensure that decision makers throughout the organization understand the state of the intermodal industry and can take advantage of business opportunities.
Intermodal operations management
• Supervise the management of rail, truck and inland container yard contracts as well as any other contracts or agreements established to support intermodal operations.
• Supervise development and monitoring of processes to ensure efficient and cost competitive compliance with Maersk Line commitments to intermodal contracts. Work with other Maersk Line organizations to facilitate cross-functional support for Maersk Line contract compliance. Lead intermodal support for the USA Country Operations Compliance Program. Establish internal audits of intermodal processes and respond to correct the results of external audits.
• Maintain professional and effective relationship with vendors, establish procedures to monitor their compliance with their contractual commitments and take effective corrective action in the case of non-compliance.
• Supervise the development of USA Country Cluster strategy and policy for routing in MEPC and monitor compliance with that policy.
• Supervise and participate in the intermodal team’s support of USA Country Cluster business continuity planning and execution.
Cost control
• Establish plans to meet and exceed intermodal cost and inland transportation plan compliance key performance indicators (KPI’s) associated with the Maersk Line StreamLine strategy. Coordinate the efforts of vendors and other USA Operations and Dispatch functions to achieve continuous improvement in the efficiency and cost of intermodal service in the USA Country Cluster.
• Drive appropriate update and review of FACT cost data. Identify and resolve incidents of high cost discovered.
• Support Intermodal Finance in the development and review of the intermodal Net Operating Profit System (NOPS) budget. Ensure that all intermodal costs are accurately recorded and accruals for expected expenditures are accurately predicted and recorded in the budget.
• Control and supervise the Intermodal Administrative budget and meet targets set for improvement.
Procurement leadership and support
• Lead or participate in cross functional procurement teams for rail, trucking and container yard contract negotiations as appropriate.
• Develop and coordinate the execution of an intermodal procurement strategy that is fully coordinated with the Maersk Line Centre Planning and Product teams as well as the NAM Liner Operations Cluster terminal strategy .
Safety and Environment
• Leader in the Intermodal Teams participation in the Maersk Inc. Drive to Zero safety program.
• Develop and maintain a safety and environmental strategy and plan for intermodal transport.
• Ensure contracts and standard operating procedures support safety and environmental laws and regulations and support the goals of the Maersk Line/APMM safety and environmental programs and initiatives.
• Lead representation on the Intermodal team on the Maersk Line Restricted Cargo Working Group.
Process Excellence
• Act as an Ambassador for the Maersk Line Process Excellence initiative on the intermodal team.
• Understand and drive the principles of PEX in the everyday operation of the intermodal team.
• Serve as a PEX project sponsor as necessary and coordinate support of cross-functional PEX projects as assigned.
Other Responsibilities
Performs other job-related duties as necessary to support the objectives of the USA Country Operations department as required.
Supports the principles of the Maersk Process Excellence Program and the Maersk Inc. Drive to Zero safety campaign. Responsible for driving the concept of continuous improvement that is the basis for both these initiatives into the everyday actions and problem solving approaches of the USA Intermodal team.
Job Specifications
Education
• Bachelors degree required; Master’s Degree a plus.
Experience
• Minimum 5 years work experience in the transportation industry or similar role in other industries and 5 years management experience required. Extensive experience in leading and participating in cross-fuctional teams working on technical and operational projects desired. Experience in negotiating and managing contracts required.
Skills
• Strong leadership skills required to manage colleagues directly and to lead peers and executive leaders through influence.
