Primary Role
Water Treatment Plant Operator with a Level III or IV WA State DOH Water Treatment Plant Operator Certification.
An American Water company, American Water CDM contracts operation of the Tolt Treatment Facility for Seattle Public Utilities. With a design capacity of 120 million gallons per day the Tolt facility is the largest direct filtration, ozonation plant in the state of Washington.
The operator works an assigned 12-hour shift operating the facility, which includes pumps, valves, filters, chemical feed systems, and ozone generating equipment. The operator monitors on-line analyzers, does frequent water quality tests, analyzes data, and makes necessary chemical dosage and adjustments to maintain the highest water quality. The operator communicates with Seattle Public Utilities to determine production needs. The operator is responsible for operation of the facility, inspecting equipment and performing the necessary preventative and or corrective equipment maintenance under general directions of Chief Operator /Facility Manager.
Key Accountabilities
Oversight of the treatment process using SCADA, adjusting chemical feed rates as needed, maintain neat and accurate operation records, and backwashing filters to meet water quality parameters and production demands
Operating ozone generation equipment
Performing prescribed water analysis
Collecting prearranged samples for laboratory analysis
Monitoring chemical leak detection equipment
Handling of hazardous chemicals used in water treatment, accepting chemical deliveries, maintain accurate chemical inventory records
Monitoring the operation of the facility utility water, domestic water, fire water, HVAC, electrical, communication, and other peripheral systems
Knowledgeable in the use of a variety of power and hand tools, required to perform routine maintenance tasks
Perform maintenance duties as assigned
Inspects plant equipment and processes regularly
Monitoring the security of the facility and grounds
Communicates with other shift plant operators regarding plant conditions at beginning and end of shift
Perform general house keeping duties to maintain facility cleanliness
Willing to fill vacant shifts as needed
Participates in training programs
Skills
• Able to read gauges and meters.
• Prepare and maintain accurate paperwork such as records, logs, orders, surveys and routine reports as directed.
• Able to perform accurate mathematical calculations related to this position.
• Good communication skills with all levels.
• Perform standardized water process control, monitoring, and compliance sampling and testing.
• Past working knowledge using mechanical skills, for making minor repairs to process equipment, piping, motors, etc.
• Ability to respond to emergencies
• Capable of lifting and/or carrying 50lbs. or more on a frequent basis. Walking up and down stairs and long distances. Carrying, climbing, and working from ladders. Working in confined areas. Ability to wear a respirator or SCBA as required.
• Hands-on experience in light duty electrical power systems (240 V/ single and three phase) and instrumentation calibration and use.
• Excavation equipment a plus
• Some computer skills; MS Word, MS Excel and SCADA systems.
• Collect water samples for analysis by state lab
Knowledge
• Knowledge of the techniques, equipment and materials used in the mechanical maintenance and repair of related equipment and systems.
• Possesses a thorough knowledge of well operation and maintenance.
• Specifically but not limited to knowledge of methods and precautions in storing and handling chlorine and other industrial chemicals.
• Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
• A thorough understanding of operation and maintenance of a drinking water purification plant is required, with at least 3 yrs relevant exp. Level II will be considered with the ability to obtain a Level III Cert. within in 1 year.
• High School graduate or state recognized education equivalency certificate. College course work and/or degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science or engineering curriculum are desired. Must possess a valid State driver’s license. Attend continuing education as needed for Operator certification renewal.
• Additional trade specific courses preferred.
Requires Level III or VI Washington State Department of Health Water Treatment Plant Operator Certification or comparable ABC Certification
