Shell Oil Company is currently seeking a Media Relations and News Bureau Manager for their Houston, Texas location.
Responsibilities:
- Accountable for all (reactive, proactive and interactive) material released to the media throughout the U.S., following Investor Relations Disclosure Standard and RDS/Group Media Relations protocols
- Advise the President and senior leaders on media strategy, shaping of Shell’s messages and communicating effectively with multiple external audiences
- Develop and maintain strong networks with leadership, investor relations, local and regional external affairs managers and others within Shell Communications in order to effectively manage media and related stakeholder issues across Shell in the U.S.
- Provide updates and counsel to other communications managers in the communications network on media issues
- Develop media strategy in conjunction with Country Media Relations and Group Media Relations
- Ensure compliance with the Disclosure Standard
- Lead the development of media strategies to manage, defend and enhance the reputation of Shell in the U.S. Proactively look for opportunities to promote businesses within the U.S., as appropriate
- Develop and maintain strong direct effective relationships with local, regional, national, and international trade media across multiple business lines
- Engage national and international media at a senior level on a regular basis, often daily to generate positive visibility of Shell businesses in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, in partnership with country Communications heads and Communications business leaders
- Designate Company spokesperson on multiple subject materials including CO2, technologies and business practices. Primary role in managing media interviews for senior executives and other key leaders
- Develop and deliver on performance agreements with Communications business leads
- Advise senior management on key media opportunities and issues, media train company officials, and brief executives
- Manage and monitor media placements to ensure appropriate coordination of multiple news forums
- Oversee the analysis of impact on strategically significant media outlet placements
- Develop and manage communication strategies, initiatives, key messages, questions and answers and media response/press statements
- Manage and lead HR processes including appraisals, ranking and open resourcing activities for the media team
Requirements:
- Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Public Relations, Journalism or related field. Advanced degree or commensurate experience preferred
- Fifteen (15) years of experience in strategic media relations campaign design and implementation
- Deep portfolio of relationships in the media, preferably with governments, NGOs, and international institutions
- Broad familiarity with agenda-setting media organizations and journalists in the United States, Canada, and Mexico
- Experience managing a range of communication channels to include Internet, video/TV, publications, print, and broadcast media
- Excellent grasp of evolving media environment including new media and the political, cultural, and economic impact of this changing landscape on energy industry communications
- Experience working in an international environment with multiple countries and cultures
- Leadership experience in motivating a professional team and creating a positive and collaborative work environment
- Ability to quickly establish credibility with multiple audiences and articulate clearly within tight deadlines
- Demonstrated experience in public speaking
- Ability to think in terms of the client experience, perspective and impact and to work collaboratively
- Self-starter, independently driven, results oriented, and demonstrates good judgment working in a high-stakes, stressful environment with a wide variety of issues and materials
- Knowledge of media research and measurement tools
